A Children’s Doctor in Gympie, Close to Home
When your child is unwell or you have a question about how they’re growing, you want a children’s doctor in Gympie who can see them soon and explain things clearly. Driving to the Sunshine Coast or waiting weeks for an appointment is hard with a sick or worried child. Children’s health is part of our GP services in Gympie, for babies, kids and teenagers.
Children change quickly, and so do their health needs. A newborn needs regular checks on feeding, weight and development. A toddler picks up coughs, ear infections and rashes. School-age kids get sports injuries, asthma flare-ups and questions about sleep, behaviour or learning. Teenagers need a doctor they feel comfortable talking to.
At Mary Valley Family Practice, your child’s GP gets to know your family over time. We listen to what you’ve noticed, examine your child gently, and talk you through what’s going on and what to watch for at home.

Meet Dr BillWhat a Visit Can Look Like
Three common reasons parents bring their children in, and how your GP would approach each one.
A Baby’s 6-Week Check
The concern: new parents want to know their baby is feeding and growing well.
What happens: your GP weighs and measures your baby, checks hips, eyes, heart and reflexes, talks about feeding and sleep, and fills in the red book.
A Toddler With an Earache
The concern: your toddler has a fever, is pulling at one ear and isn’t sleeping.
What happens: your GP checks the ears, throat and chest, explains whether treatment is needed, and tells you which signs mean you should come back.
A School Sports Injury
The concern: your child hurt an ankle at weekend sport and it’s still sore and swollen.
What happens: your GP examines the ankle, arranges an X-ray if needed, and gives a plan for rest and a safe return to sport.

Leave a Google ReviewChildren’s Health FAQs
What ages do you see?
Our GPs see children of all ages, from newborn babies to teenagers. If you’re looking for a children’s doctor in Gympie, your child can see the same GP as the rest of your family.
When should my child have a health check?
Your child’s red book lists the key ages for health and development checks in the early years. Your GP can do these checks and record the results. If you’re unsure whether your child is due, bring the red book and ask.
Are childhood immunisations free?
Vaccines on the National Immunisation Program are free for eligible children with a Medicare card. The schedule includes doses at birth, 2, 4, 6, 12 and 18 months, and 4 years. Children who missed vaccines can catch up for free until they turn 20. A consultation fee may apply, so please check our Fees & Billing page.
When should I see a doctor about my child’s fever?
A baby under 3 months with a temperature of 38°C or higher should go to the nearest emergency department straight away. For older children, book a GP visit if the fever lasts more than a day or two, or if your child seems more unwell than you’d expect. Call 000 if your child has trouble breathing, is very drowsy or hard to wake.
Can my sick child be seen today?
Call us as early in the day as you can and let reception know your child is unwell. We’ll do our best to find a time that day. In an emergency, call 000.
Do I need a referral for my child to see a GP?
No. You can book directly with our GPs. If your child needs to see a paediatrician or other specialist, your GP can write a referral.
Can my teenager see the GP on their own?
Yes. Many teenagers like to spend part of the visit with the GP on their own. Your GP will explain how confidentiality works, including the rare times when information has to be shared to keep a young person safe.
Can you help with behaviour, learning or attention concerns?
Yes. Your GP is a good first step. We look at sleep, hearing, vision and general health, talk with you about home and school, and refer to a paediatrician, psychologist or speech pathologist when needed. If attention is the main concern, see our ADHD assessment page.
What should I bring to my child’s appointment?
Bring your child’s red book, Medicare card, a list of any medicines they take, and any letters or reports from other doctors. It helps to write down your questions before you come.
How much does a children’s appointment cost?
The cost depends on the type and length of the appointment. Please see our Fees & Billing page or call us on +61 413 901 807 for current fees before your appointment.
