Why It Matters

ADHD Assessment in Gympie, Close to Home

Getting an ADHD assessment in Gympie can feel hard to start. Long waits, travel to Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast and not knowing who to ask often mean people put it off for years. Your GP is a good place to begin, and ADHD care is part of our GP services in Gympie.

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that starts in childhood, but many people are not diagnosed until they are adults. Around 1 in 20 Australians has ADHD. For some, it shows up as trouble focusing at school. For others, it is a lifetime of lost keys, missed deadlines and feeling restless, or a child who finds the classroom a daily struggle.

Since 1 December 2025, specialist GPs in Queensland can start, change and continue ADHD medicine for adults. This means more adults can have their ADHD care managed by their local GP.

At Mary Valley Family Practice, your GP listens to your story, looks at other causes that can feel like ADHD, and works with you, your family and other health professionals on a plan that fits your life.

What ADHD Care Can Look Like

Three common reasons people book an ADHD appointment, and how your GP would approach each one.

Example 1

An Adult Who Has Always Struggled

The concern: you’ve always found it hard to focus and stay organised, and a family member was recently diagnosed with ADHD.

What happens: your GP takes a detailed history, asks about your childhood, checks for other causes and talks through the next steps for an adult ADHD assessment.

Example 2

A Teacher Raises Concerns

The concern: your child’s teacher says they find it hard to sit still and finish work in class.

What happens: your GP asks about home and school, checks hearing, sleep and general health, and refers your child to a paediatrician for an ADHD assessment.

Example 3

Already Diagnosed and New to Gympie

The concern: you were diagnosed with ADHD elsewhere and need a local doctor to look after your ongoing care.

What happens: your GP reviews your reports and current treatment, and agrees a plan for regular reviews in Gympie.

How It Works

Your ADHD Assessment, Step by Step

  1. Book a Long Appointment

Book online or call us and let reception know it’s about ADHD, so we can give you enough time.

  2. Tell Your Story

Your GP asks about your symptoms now and as a child, and may give you questionnaires to complete, sometimes with a family member or teacher.

  3. Checks and Next Steps

Your GP looks for other causes, such as sleep, mood or thyroid problems, and explains whether care can continue in the clinic or a referral is needed.

  4. Your Plan and Reviews

Together you agree on a plan, which may include therapy, practical strategies and medicine, with regular reviews to check how it’s working.

FAQs

ADHD Assessment FAQs

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in Queensland?

Queensland rules don’t say which doctor must diagnose ADHD. Some GPs assess and diagnose adults in the clinic, and others refer to a psychiatrist, paediatrician or psychologist. At your first appointment, your GP will explain whether your assessment can be done in the clinic or whether a referral is the right next step.

Can a GP prescribe ADHD medicine for adults in Queensland?

Yes. Since 1 December 2025, specialist GPs in Queensland can start, change and continue ADHD medicine for adults, within the state’s maximum dose limits. Not everyone with ADHD needs medicine, and your GP will talk through all your options.

Do I need a referral for an ADHD assessment?

No. You can book directly with our GPs. If you need to see a psychiatrist, paediatrician or psychologist, your GP can write a referral.

Can adults be diagnosed with ADHD?

Yes. ADHD starts in childhood, but many people are first diagnosed as adults, often after years of struggling with focus, organisation or restlessness. Part of an adult ADHD assessment is looking back at how you were as a child.

How long does an ADHD assessment take?

An ADHD assessment usually takes more than one appointment. Your first visit should be a long appointment, so please let reception know it’s about ADHD when you book.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring anything that helps tell your story: school reports, previous assessments or specialist letters, and a list of your current medicines. For an adult assessment, it can help to bring a parent, partner or close friend who knows you well.

How is ADHD assessed in children?

Your GP starts by talking with you and your child, checking hearing, sleep and general health, and gathering information from home and school. Your GP then refers your child to a paediatrician or psychologist for diagnosis, and can share ongoing care with them.

I already have an ADHD diagnosis. Can you continue my care?

Yes. Bring your diagnosis report and any specialist letters to your appointment. Your GP will review your history and current treatment, and agree a plan for ongoing care and regular reviews.

Is medicine the only treatment for ADHD?

No. ADHD can be managed with psychological therapies, practical strategies, education and support at school or work, as well as medicine when it’s appropriate. Many people use a mix of these.

How much does an ADHD appointment cost?

The cost depends on the length of your appointment. Please see our Fees & Billing page or call us on +61 413 901 807 for current fees before your appointment.
